About

A water-heavy course rated amongst Chiang Mai's best

Formerly known as Gassan Lake City Golf Club and much improved following a 2014 renovation by renowned designers Schmidt & Curley, Gassan Legacy Golf Club isn't a long course but water on every hole means accuracy is at a premium. Home to mature trees, immaculate greens and numerous bunkers, it's a risk/reward affair that offers an enjoyable challenge.

Water is a factor on almost every tee shot, whether it's a forced carry or a lake intruding into the fairway in the landing zone. Fortunately, most of your approach shots are water free but you will encounter a different type of hazard in the shape of numerous cleverly placed bunkers waiting to grab the wayward shot.

Unusually there are five par-3 holes on this golf courses, varying in length from 90 to 180 yards from the white tees so you will get to use most of the clubs in your bag negotiating these. The first of these is the 2nd which involves a water carry to a narrow green, while the 7th is rated the most difficult hole on the courses because the target is an island green with no room for error.

The designers have compensated by throwing in an equal number of par 5’s with the 8th, a right-angle dogleg, probably the most challenging, requiring a water carry off the tee to a fairway with bunkers protecting the tiger line and water along the right. The hole then turns the other way as you approach the green with water all along the left.

The 17th is an S-shaped brute with water off the tee and numerous bunkers lying in wait, followed by another water carry for your second before you attempt to find the narrow putting surface. To add to the fun there are a few short par 4’s which are reachable for the very big hitters.

The slightly quirky club house has not been modernised but offers adequate facilities and should not spoil your day out. Now one of the best courses in Chiang Mai, a round at Gassan Legacy Golf Club should form part of any Chiang Mai golf holiday.

Can’t beat the price but bring a lot of balls

Really difficult design with narrow curving fairways lining up with bunkers on one side and water on the others. Lost 8 balls in total! Normally it is 1-3 in a course new to me. Though overall I enjoyed the game provided that one has to forgot about the score. Quite a number of spots on the fairways being rid of grass, especially near the green. Good pace of play, my group of 2 balls finished in 3 hours despite the tee times are basically fully booked in the morning. After all you can’t beat the price which was just half of that of Alpine we played the day before. Great value for money but high handicappers may found it frustrating. Bring a lot of balls.

There are no practice putting greens and the driving range is shooting balls in to a lake.

The course it self was fairly challenging; be prepared to ask caddies for advice for hidden hazards. Greens vary in conditions and can be extremely difficult; even if you hit a perfect shot the ball will simply roll of the green anyway. Be aware of the areas where watering of the course has taken place, as those areas are of no comparison to the rest of the course.

Water and Slow Play

You better bring lots of balls - there is water at every single hole. Especially some holes have water all around the green and the green in a size of a blanket … the caddies were nice but incapable of reading the green and or speaking english
