Mae Moh Golf Course
About
Enjoyable rural course in the mountains around 2 hours from Chiang Mai
Situated on a mountain overlooking an expansive clay lignite mine in Mae Moh, just south of Lampang, Mae Moh Golf Course offers a unique and scenic experience. It's a public course managed by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), with the initial nine holes, that opened back in 1984, winding along a mountain ridge, providing breathtaking vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys. The addition of a second nine in 1990 transformed the course into a standard par-72. Featuring a range uphill and downhill holes with numerous blind shots to the greens, the course offers a scenic and challenging test for golfers.
Notable highlights at Mae Moh include the par-5 2nd hole, boasting two alternative greens. This short par-5 ascends sharply, curving left with a blind approach to the flag. The par-4 6th hole stands out as the course's toughest, requiring a tee shot down into the valley with a lake on the left. Negotiating this obstacle sets up an uphill approach to a sloping green, with a massive tree at the lake's edge challenging tee shots.
The 10th hole, despite its appearance as a short par-3, is ranked as index #2. Descending steeply to a small green, water surrounds its front, while a deep bunker awaits errant long shots. The closing hole, a tricky par-4, demands careful navigation of water on the right during the tee shot. A drive down the left side of the fairway becomes crucial to avoid water, followed by a near-perfect long approach shot to reach the green in regulation.
Facilities at Mae Moh may be characterized as rustic, lacking luxurious amenities but sufficient for most golfers. While approximately 2 hours' drive from Chiang Mai, the journey is worthwhile, especially for Chiang Mai golfers seeking a departure from the usual tourist routes. Despite some areas in need of better maintenance, the mature course's unique and enjoyable design ensures a pleasant day of golf.
